The Purpose of Music

Categories: Music

“Music was made to serve a holy purpose, to lift the thoughts to that which is pure, noble, and elevating, and to awaken in the soul devotion and gratitude to God.”
Patriarchs and Prophets, page 594, paragraph 2

According to the quote above, music was made for three important purposes:
– To serve a holy (or ‘sanctifying’) purpose
– To lift the thoughts to that which is pure, noble, and elevating
– To awaken in the soul devotion and gratitude to God

Given that we have several counterfeits of music today, we have now criteria whereby we can assess our music. Is it sanctifying? Does it lift our thoughts to nobler themes? Does it awaken devotion and gratitude to God?

Music has more to do with our thoughts and perceptions than we may understand. Good music will positively affect our dispositions, outlooks and behaviours… thus equipping us to face a dark world with relative stability.

May our choices be reflective of the true purposes that God ordained for music.
